Citizen Taxpayers Association Thanks All Voters That Came Out and Supported Taking Back Property Rights

Enumclaw —Citizen Taxpayers Association, a non-profit organization that gets involved in issues affecting taxpayer rights, is grateful to all of the supporters of I-933 for helping us call attention to the egregious problem with land-use regulations in Washington state.

“Property rights are coming to the forefront of many campaigns and we welcome the dialogue,” said CTA president and former King County Councilmember Steve Hammond. Hammond has long been a paladin for private property rights. He led the opposition to King County’s Critical Areas Ordinance which is still a flash-point of anger among those whose saw the C.A.O. as damage to the use or value of their private property. “I-933 sought to bring fairness to the unfairness of the CAO” Hammond said. “Unfortunately, those who live in the areas not affected are still able to impose their political will on those who do live in affected areas. The majority votes on land they do not own and they are violating the civil rights of landowners.”

“This campaign, sponsored by the Washington State Farm Bureau, was truly a grass roots effort. The opposition was funded by millionaire/billionaire types while we drove tractors,” Hammond said. “We were outspent six to one. I saw hard-working citizens giving up work, family and sleep time to try and get fairness back into the land-use equation. I am as amazed as I am grateful. It was a pleasure to work with the Farm Bureau and all the others who supported us.”

Citizen Taxpayers Association will continue to work on other issues affecting taxpayers, but doesn’t think property rights issues are resolved by this vote. “We have their attention now,” Hammond said. “Every forum or debate I attended, without exception, had the opposition voluntarily admitting that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Even the Governor promised to address the situation if I-933 was voted down. We intend to hold her to that promise.”

Citizen Taxpayers Association believes that both the federal and state constitutions require compensation for public use of private land. Regulations which benefit all should require payment by all. No landowner should ever be made to pay for that which a government jurisdiction decides is for the benefit of all.

Again, Citizen Taxpayers Association would like to thank those who worked so hard on I-933 and the voters who came out and voted with us agreeing that our private property rights need to be protected.
